Mother Nature alters July 4 celebration in Hinesburg

For the first time in Hinesburg’s Fourth of July history, the Hilly Hobble Race was cancelled because of severe weather conditions. “At 6pm on July 3 we had everything set for the race and registration was taking place at the Community School,” explained Hinesburg Rec Coordinator Jen McCuin. “First, David Eddy canceled the 10K scheduled to begin at 6:30pm. After claps and rumblings of thunder, the rain picked up, keeping everyone involved on stand-by. About 25 runners huddled under the over-hang at HCS waiting for the weather to pass, but by 6:50pm there [were] bolts of lightning so the race was canceled. We tried to get that race in, but Mother Nature had other plans.”

Fortunately the weather on the Fourth of July improved as the annual book sale at Town Hall kicked off the day’s festivities followed by food vendors, a themed parade, an ice cream social at the Masonic temple, tunes by 440 and children’s activities at the Hinesburg Community School playground. Other festivities included a craft sale at the United Church of Hinesburg, the duck race, and of course, the fireworks.
