Colleen Bess (Kirby) Alexander – Hinesburg
On the afternoon of July 21, 2014, Colleen peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with complications from congenital heart disease. Colleen was born in Burlington on Oct. 28, 1963, the daughter of Leo R. and Joan G. Kirby, who predeceased her. She was a graduate of Winooski High School. She earned a paralegal studies degree from Champlain College and worked for several local law firms. Despite the challenges of her illness, Colleen lived a full life. In her 50 years, she fulfilled her passion for a multitude of interests as an actress (stage and film), screenwriter, director and producer. Colleen was a lover of animals and enjoyed the company of her two shelties, rag doll cat, and her horses. She reveled in traveling, camping, gardening, and playing board games. Colleen had a keen interest in nature and was a very spiritual person. She particularly enjoyed mystical gatherings and retreats with her magical sisters and spiritual community. Colleen is survived by her loving husband of 11 years, Don Alexander; six siblings, Steven Kirby and wife, Florence, Debra Cauchon and husband, Craig, Michael Kirby and wife, Debby, Cindy Parker and husband, Chris, Paula Rose and husband, Ron, and her “one and only” twin, Colette Wasem and husband, Brian; “Dad-in-law,” Donald, and “Mom-in-law,” Mary Alexander; sister-in-law, Lynn Martin and husband, Paul; brothers-in-law, Steven Murray and John Alexander; along with special aunts and uncles, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends. The family appreciates the efforts of the many medical professionals who cared for Colleen throughout the years, including those in Boston, Burlington and beyond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Colleen’s memory to the Adult Congenital Heart Association at or checks payable to ACHA to 6757 Greene St., Suite 335, Philadelphia, PA 19119. A special gathering to celebrate Colleen’s life will be held in the fall (her favorite season) at a date and time to be determined.
