The Champlain Valley Union (CVU) Redhawks lost to Middlebury last Friday night in the opening round of the Division 1 football playoffs, 54-6.  The game started out promisingly enough for CVU when, on the game’s opening drive, QB Andrew Bortnick  ran 44 yards around left end deep into Middlebury territory and RB Richard Lowrey punched it in from the 1-yard line for the score.  The CVU offense was held in check for the rest of the game as the usually potent Bortnick/Lowrey running combination was held to only 68 yards on 31 carries. The defense was led by LBs Jacob Griggs and Matt Goldsborough with 4 tackles each, LB Jack Frost had 3 tackles and a fumble recovery, and DL Scott Edwards had 3 tackles.

Although the Middlebury defense was able to contain the CVU running attack in this game the offense had a great season overall and was second in scoring in Division 1 with 259 points.  The running game amassed more than 2,100 yards and 33 touchdowns for the season.

Team leaders for the season: Rushing yards – Richard Lowrey (1,058 yards, 16 touchdowns); Passing yards – Andrew Bortnick (361 yards, 3 touchdowns); Receiving yards – Trevor Kingston (10/166 yards, 2 touchdowns); Tackles – Jacob Griggs (49); Interceptions – Jeremy Fuller (4); Sacks – Graeme Waples, Graham Hulvey and Matt Goldsborough (2); Return yards – Jack Zullo (225 yards); Special teams tackles – Brandon Young (5).
