It may not come as much of a surprise, but Summer Spillane has continued her dominance in cross country running. A former standout runner at Champlain Valley Union High School, Spillane is on track to leave her mark on Middlebury College.
Spillane began the cross country season strong with a third place finish at the Aldrich Invitational, and set the tone for her senior year. She followed up with a 15th-place finish at the Purple Valley Classic, a 24th-place finish at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Cross Country Championship in October, and a ninth place finish at the 48th Annual University of Albany’s Cross Country Invitational. On Nov. 1 Spillane led the Panthers to a win at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship with her second place finish time of 22 minutes and 33 seconds.
After that performance Spillane set the bar higher with a fourth place finish in the NCAA Division 3 New England Regional Championship at Williams College at Mt. Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, Mass. on Nov. 15. With a time of 21:54.2, she led Middlebury to a second place finish out of 57 teams. For her efforts, she was selected to the All New England First Team.
This weekend Spillane and her Middlebury teammates will participate in the NCAA Division 3 Championship on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 12:30pm at Wilmington College in Mason, Ohio at the Golf Center of Kings Island. Running enthusiasts can catch the national race broadcast live online at NCAA.com.
