Harold A. Smith passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, surrounded by family. He was born on March 8, 1936, in Burlington, where he married the former Donna Gee who predeceased him in 2007, as did his parents and brother earlier. His wife and he had five children, Judith Audette of Brownsville, Susan Conley of Hinesburg, Karen Socinski of Essex, Steven Smith of Essex, and James Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla. He is survived by them and their respective spouses, as well as 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; Johanna; and a large extended family. Harold was employed by Vermont Structural Steel and Reliance Steel until his retirement and was a parishioner at St. Jude’s in Hinesburg. He enjoyed his camp at Lake Carmi and loved sharing his “little paradise” with his family and friends. Harold knew how to cherish the “little things” in life and was filled with wonder and amazement. One had to only watch him filling his birdfeeders and providing for countless chipmunks to know that the world around him was precious to him on many levels. He often said that we had to be appreciative and thankful for as much as we had. Harold loved and was loved by his large family and was affectionately known as “Papa G.G.” (Grouchy Grandpa). His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were amused by his antics, especially his famous “Good-Bye Hug.” In truth, the world is a better place because of his having been in it. A Funeral Mass for Harold was held Monday, April 13, 2015, at St. Jude’s Parish in Hinesburg, with burial at the convenience of the family in the spring. Thank you to the University of Vermont Medical Center, and for the countless thoughts and prayers that were extended.
