There are a lot of changes for the Mount Mansfield-Champlain Valley co-op girls hockey team as the partnership between the two schools enters its second season.
Last year went brilliantly for the team, as they won Mount Mansfield’s (and CVU’s) first Division II girls hockey title. This year, the program moves up to D-I and will face much tougher competition.
“We’ll need to play with more intensity, speed and strength to compete at this level for the entire season,” MMU-CVU coach Paul Wintersteen said in an email. “We’re looking at the first half of the season as a transition timeframe and hope to be playing our best hockey during the second half.”
The team features 11 CVU players and 11 Mount Mansfield students, with a strong mix of returners and newcomers looking to make a smooth transition to a higher division.
Here are three players to watch:
Jackie Ryan, senior: The MMU-CVU co-op’s leading scorer from last year, Ryan returns to anchor the offense. The CVU senior had 32 points last season and will look to expand on that number against tough D-I opponents.
Anna Burke, senior: Burke split time between offense and defense last season, using her size to help shut down other teams’ top players. But Burke was also a force on offense, providing 29 points for the CougarHawks, and earned Free Press All-State second-team honors.
Lydia Maitland, junior: A strong offensive presence in last year’s D-II state title game, the CVU student provided one goal and two assists to help lead the CougarHawks to their first state championship. With breakaway speed that was shown off in the final, Maitland could be a weapon on offense this season.
Other players to watch: Audrey Scott, forward, senior; Margaret Thompson, defense, senior; Meghan Hawley, defense, senior; Lauren Hagerty, forward, senior; Fiona Dulude, goalie, senior; Emily Zambrano, defense, freshman; Caroline Reynolds, defense, sophomore; Flynn Hall, defense, freshman; Nicole Wright, forward, freshman
Up next: Saturday vs. Hamden, Conn. at MMU/CVU at Cairn Arena.
