The Lyric Theatre Company’s presents “9 to 5 The Musical” for five performances, from April 6 through April 9.
When asked, “Why do this show now?” the team says that it’s a perfect pairing with the recent production of The Who’s “Tommy”, which had a successful run at the Flynn in November.
Both shows share themes of overcoming adversity. While “Tommy” was a darker show with serious story line and rock’n’roll music, “9 to 5 The Musical” is all about fun with a light-hearted, toe-tapping score.
The stage musical is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie and features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton. The title song, “9 to 5”, has become the working woman’s anthem. The plot shines a spotlight on the plight of women in the workplace in the late 1970s. Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the boss.
This high-energy show will be Lyric Theatre Company’s 90th production on the Flynn MainStage. Members of the cast and team with ties to the Shelburne, Hinesburg or Charlotte areas include leading actor Serena Magnan O’Connell, featured actors Mark Cranmer, Geri Ann Higgins and Christopher Hart, ensemble members Kristin Miskavage and Weller Henderson, and Choreographer Corey Camerlengo.
During each show, Lyric supports another area nonprofit. For “9 to 5 The Musical”, the nonprofit community partner is Dress for Success Burlington. The mission of this organization is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
