School fields damaged; Hinesburg man charged

A 20-year-old Hinesburg man has been charged with driving drunk on a four-wheeler and causing damage to the athletic fields at Champlain Valley Union High School.

Kiland Place has been charged with driving under the influence and malicious mischief.

On Oct. 5 at 10:55 p.m., Hinesburg police responded to the area of CVU and Place roads for a report that a four-wheeler had struck a vehicle and was driving on the sports fields at the high school.

Once the damage was confirmed, police began a search for the driver. At one point, the driver came onto the roadway and, when the officer turned on his blue lights, the driver took off back into the woods. Police remained in the area, and could hear the vehicle in the woods.

Through a tip, the officer learned of a possible suspect, went to Place’s home, and was waiting there when he drove up on the four-wheeler, police said.

Early indications are that the school maintenance staff will be able to repair the fields fairly quickly.
