Winter blood donations help keep supplies at the ready

The holidays are a time when blood donations often drop off, leaving regional supplies low. Donors can help replenish the supply at an upcoming American Red Cross blood drive. Nearby drives will be held in Shelburne, Hinesburg, South Burlington and Burlington in the next several weeks.

All blood types are needed this winter. According to the Red Cross, more than half of all platelet donations go to cancer patients who may need platelet transfusions to prevent life-threatening bleeding during chemotherapy.

Donation appointments can be quickly and easily scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

As a special appreciation gift, those who give Dec. 21 through Jan. 7 will receive a long-sleeved Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last, Red Cross officials said.

The schedule for upcoming drives includes:

Jan. 5: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  University of Vermont Medical Center, 111 Colchester Ave.
Jan. 11: noon to 5 p.m. Burlington Electric Department, 585 Pine St.
