Music fans’ hopes for a David Byrne concert in Shelburne this summer were dashed last week when the debonair former Talking Heads front man nixed his slot in the Concerts on the Green lineup literally hours after the date was announced.
Despite the about-face, the schedule is shaping up nicely for the popular Ben & Jerry’s outdoor concert series on the lawn at Shelburne Museum. While Byrne is out, last week saw two additions to the series – the Fleet Foxes and the Decemberists, the latter announcement coming after the press deadline for The Citizen. The duo Sylvan Esso announced weeks ago rounds out the list of performers booked so far.
Higher Ground in South Burlington handles the series lineup and broke the news about Byrne’s change of heart on Facebook last week. “Unfortunately, David Byrne at Ben and Jerry’s Concerts on The Green at Shelburne Museum has been canceled. Tickets will not go on sale tomorrow,” it said. “Due to the size and scope of David Byrne’s production, it was deemed that the show cannot be accommodated at Shelburne Museum.”
The Decemberists will take the stage on a summer tour with a new studio album out in March titled “I’ll be Your Girl.” The Portland, Ore.-based band has been a force of indie rock for 17 years. Known for quirky historic story-telling in their lyrics, The Decemberists were nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for their song “Down by the Water.”
Concert dates announced so far are:
• May 26: Indie folk rock band Fleet Foxes
• June 9: The Decemberists
• Aug. 2: Sylvan Esso
Tickets are on sale now for all of the shows at Higher Ground’s website, highergroundmusic.com. Children 12 and under are free for both shows.
Concerts start at 7 p.m. with gates opening at 6 p.m. Information and tickets at the Higher Ground box office, online at highergroundmusic.com or by phone at 877-987-6487.
