New pet doc in the house

Ark Veterinary Hospital in Shelburne announces the addition of a new veterinarian to its practice, Dr. Sarah Smets.

A member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Vermont Veterinary Medical Association and the Greater Burlington Veterinary Association, Dr. Smets has an interest in internal medicine and hopes to apply her knowledge to help chronically ill patients.

Born and raised in Belgium, Dr. Smets grew up on a farm with dogs, horses, sheep, goats and Flemish Giant rabbits. During her undergraduate studies she spent a year in Sweden at Uppsala University where she met her husband, Anders, a New Englander.

She did her veterinary studies at Ghent University in Ghent, Belgium, with a focus on companion animals. Previously she earned degrees in history at Ghent, and in political science and nonprofit organizations at Suffolk University in Boston.

Dr. Smets also shares her home with her 10-year-old golden retriever Penelope Waffle and 8-year-old cat, Frederick Deuce.
