April forecast: Spring sports with a side of snow

With snow flurries falling, the CVU girls lacrosse team started the season with a 10-7 win over South Burlington Tuesday.

The Champlain Valley Union girls lacrosse team opened the season with a 10-7 win over host South Burlington on Tuesday night, outscoring their opponent 6-3 in the second half to earn the victory.
Cate Noel led the attack for the Redhawks (1-0) with four goals, while Lydia Maitland tallied twice. Bella Rieley scored a goal and added two assists. Teddi Simons, Mia Burmsted and Petra Kapsalis each found the back of the net once.
Ali Wainer earned the win in net with seven saves and South Burlington goalie Claire Phillips stopped nine shots.

The Champlain Valley Union boys lacrosse team is off to a hot start.
Will Braun netted five goals on Monday afternoon to lift the Redhawks to a 10-2 victory over host Hanover, N.H., CVU’s second win of the early season.
Max Gorman added a hat trick in Monday’s win, while Walter Braun added a goal and an assist. Andrew Tieso stopped 12 shots to earn the win in net.
On Saturday, CVU opened the season with a 10-5 win over Rice at UVM’s Virtue Field. Walter Braun, Will Braun and Charlie Averill were among the scorers for the Redhawks, who are now 2-0.

Champlain Valley skier Emma Strack was named to the Division I coaches all-state team after a second place finish in the 5K classic race at the D-I state championships.
Strack also finished in seventh place in the 5K freestyle race in the state championship race

Four Champlain Valley Union basketball players received accolades from the coaches all-league teams.
Redhawks boys basketball player Graham Walker was named to the Metro Division second team.
CVU’s Shannon Loiseau was named to the Metro Division first team, while teammates Lindsey Albertelli and Harper Mead earned honorable mentions.

The roster for the 2018 Lions Cup Twin State soccer games has been announced and both teams have Redhawks representatives.
On the girls side, Hanna Swett and Natalie Durieux were both named to the team. Sawyer Miller-Bottoms and Nate Coffin were both named to the boys team.
The Lions Cup will take place on July 21 at Castleton University’s Spartan Stadium. The girls game will begin at 4 p.m. and the boys will kick-off at 6:30 p.m.
