Phyllis Gleason, 92, of Wake Robin Drive, Shelburne, Vt., passed away at her home on April 4, 2018.
She was born on October 17, 1925, in Worcester, Mass. to Bradford and Mabel (Bentley) Elmer. Raised in Worcester, she graduated from Framingham State Teachers College in 1947 with a BS degree in education. Upon graduation, she taught home economics for one year at Gardner High School in Gardner, Mass. On July 31, 1948 Phyllis married Walter W. Gleason of Holden, Mass.
Phyllis enjoyed reading, cooking and sewing. She also spent much time volunteering with the Girl Scouts as well as in school and public libraries. This orientation toward serving other people continued throughout her life.
Walter’s employment with Esso/Exxon took them first to New Jersey and then for many years in Europe, primarily in Belgium, with shorter stays in England and France. Phyllis and Walter enjoyed traveling, and living in Europe gave Phyllis and her family the opportunity to visit many places in that region.
Upon Walter’s retirement from Exxon, he and Phyllis lived in Grantham N.H., where she enjoyed gardening, more traveling, visits from children and grandchildren, and the companionship of a series of large dogs.
After Walter’s death in 1999, Phyllis moved to the Wake Robin life plan community in Shelburne, Vt. There she continued to enjoy cooking, sewing, reading and traveling with her family. She also became an active participant and volunteer in many of the activities at Wake Robin, including the annual tag sale committee, working at the gift shop, playing piano and in the hand bell choir, and games and dinners with her many friends.
Although it became more and more difficult to keep up with the active itineraries of younger family members and the demands of travel, Phyllis endured these without complaining and was always offering to sit out an activity by herself so that everyone else could participate.
She is survived by her sons Martin (Kristin) Gleason of Essex Junction, Vt., and Craig (Teresa) Gleason of Los Gatos, Calif., and grandchildren India Gleason and Summer Gleason of Los Gatos and Jeffrey (Christine) Gleason and Timothy Gleason of Essex Junction.
A Circle of Remembrance will be held at Wake Robin in Shelburne on Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.
