Muslim Girls bring poetry to Charlotte

The popular Muslim Girls Making Change youth slam poetry group visits Charlotte next week in a free presentation at Charlotte Central School May 17 at 6:15 p.m.

The group was formed by Kiran Waqar, Hawa Adam, Lena Ginawi and Balkisa Abdikadir who were tired of having their voices ignored by older generations.

In 2016 this group of girls turned to slam poetry to be heard, to make a change, and to bring attention to social justice through poetry. Since they began, they have competed at international levels and won numerous awards.

They hope to share their observations and demonstrate their brand of breaking down stereotypes with the Champlain Valley School District. The group members are seniors at Burlington and South Burlington high schools.
