Mary Powell wins Audubon Society National Environmental Conservation Award

Green Mountain Power President and CEO Mary Powell was awarded the 2018 Rachel Carson Award Medal from the Audubon Society for her environmental conservation work. The national award honors women who have greatly advanced conservation locally and globally. Audubon honored Powell’s ambitious energy vision to provide low-carbon, low-cost, highly reliable power to Vermonters.

Under Powell’s leadership, GMP became the first utility to offer to help customers go off-grid; Rutland became the Solar Generation Capital of New England; and GMP became the first utility anywhere to offer customers the Tesla Powerwall battery. In 2014, GMP became the first utility in the world to become a member of B Corp.

Other recipients of the 2018 Rachel Carson Medal are Gina McCarthy, former EPA administrator during the Obama administration, and Dorceta E. Taylor, director of diversity, equity and inclusion & James E. Crowfoot Professor at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability.
