CHARLOTTE – Florence Moran (Marie Lucienne Florence Laramee), our beloved mother passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, at home in her signature pink bedroom. Florence was born in Burlington on Hayward Street on November 4, 1926. Her parents, Elphege and Eugenie (Duhaime) Laramee, came from Canada to raise their big French family including Flo who lived a great 91 years as a proud native Vermonter.
She found her calling early in life as a switchboard telephone operator with the phone company on Main Street. That began Mom’s love of talking on the phone. If you look up “chit-chat” in the dictionary, you’d find a picture of Flo with a cup of coffee in front of her and the corded phone professionally cradled between shoulder and ear. Mom was the old-school Facebook of her time making sure everyone was up to date on the latest news! Mom was a gentle soul, with patient listening skills and abundant empathy; even strangers would gravitate to her relating their life stories.
You always hear in conversation that “my mother made the best pies.” Nope, not even close! Flo’s apple pies are legendary. Her crust was a work of art – every time.
Flo married H. B. Moran (Chubby) 68 years ago, her Cathedral School sweetheart. They were avid antique collectors, and frequented many weekend auctions. We have fond memories of Flo and Chub entertaining lifelong friends at camp in North Duxbury sitting around their oak kitchen table lit by the warm glow of gas lights laughing into the night. They delighted in hosting many Moran and Laramee picnics in both North Duxbury and North Ferrisburgh.
Florence is survived by her husband, Harold Moran of Charlotte; their children Sean Moran of Shelburne, Karen Moran Lafayette of Burlington, Timothy Moran of Winooski and Daniel & Cecile “Ceal” Moran of Charlotte, grandchildren and great-grandchildren Ed and wife Sarah, daughter Jillian Lafayette; Dan and wife Chelsea, daughter Taylor Lafayette; Melissa Moran, Tim Moran and partner Misty Bellew, children Christian and Ava Moran; Matt Moran and wife Miriam Rothschild. Flo is also survived by a sister-in-law “Gert” Laramee, and many other nieces and nephews with whom she had memorable relationships through the years.
Florence was the last remaining member of her 15 siblings.
Special thanks to Dr. Eugene Moore, lifelong friend Bishop Louis E. Gelineau of Providence, R.I., and to her husband Chubby and son Sean, extraordinary caretakers.
We’ll miss you, Mom.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Shelburne.
