To the Editor:
I am writing in support of Rep. Bill Lippert’s re-election to the Vermont House of Representatives.
Rep. Lippert has been Hinesburg’s champion for many years as well as a guardian for Vermont’s disadvantaged and marginalized citizens.
As the long-serving chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Lippert concerned himself with the well-being of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, especially child victims. His leadership resulted in a legal canon related to domestic violence and sexual assault that effectively and humanely holds perpetrators accountable while offering victims access to needed support and services.
Rep. Lippert presided over House Judiciary when Vermont passed Act 1, a landmark law that provided real, research-based protections for child sexual assault victims. His position on mandatory minimum sentencing and residency restrictions aligned with national experts on sex offenders. At a time when our knee-jerk reaction would have been to “lock them all up and throw away the key,” Rep. Lippert did his homework and the result was a law that provides safety, supports for victims, and requires early reporting and realistic and meaningful sentencing.
In short, Rep. Lippert serves Hinesburg by making decisions and taking positions based on facts and research. Today he continues his service to Hinesburg as well as all Vermont through his position as the chair of the House Health Care Committee.
We have been well-served by Bill Lippert and I hope we all will support his re-election bid.
