CVU basketball: Hoops on fire

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CVU 61, South Burlington 20: Champlain Valley Union girls basketball has had a big week with two big wins as they kept their streak going. On Monday night, they scored 23 points in the third quarter to pull away for a win over South Burlington.

Catherine Gilwee led the way for the undefeated Redhawks (9-0) with 11 points, while Kaylee Beyor also hit double-digits with 10 points.

Maryn Askew, Harper Mead and Mekkena Boyd all tossed in nine points each for CVU.

It was the team’s second win of the week after the team also beat Spaulding 69-9 last Thursday.

Askew (11 points) and Beyor (10 points) led the way for the Redhawks in that blowout win.

The team travels to Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans tonight and has two home games on the schedule in the next few days: Burr and Burton visit Saturday afternoon at 2:30, Essex is set for Monday at 7 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

CVU 60, Burlington 49: A balanced scoring attack led the Champlain Valley Union boys basketball team past Burlington on Friday night.

Ethan Harvey had a team-high 12 points for the Redhawks (6-2), while nine other players got on the scoresheet. Mason Otley added eight points.

Jensen Daly scored 15 points for the Seahorses, who fell to 4-4.

The team takes on St. Johnsbury Friday night at home at 6:30; the boys travel to Essex on Tuesday for a 7:30 matchup.

GIRLS HOCKEY

South Burlington 7, CVU 1: CVU could not contain South Burlington forward Kate Hall and fell to the Wolves on Saturday.

Hall had five goals and one assist for South Burlington.

Payton Skillen had the lone goal for the Redhawks, who lost their fifth game in a row.

The girls skate against South Burlington at Cairns Arena Saturday at 3:10 p.m.

BOYS HOCKEY

The boys had a slow week in their schedule. They were on deck to face Rutland on Wednesday at Cairns Arena in South Burlington after press time and will return to Cairns on Monday as the visiting team against South Burlington at 6:20 p.m.

ALPINE SKIING

Three CVU alpine skiers placed in the top 10 in the girls race at Jay Peak on Friday.

Olivia Zubarik was the top Redhawk racer, coming in second place in the downhill event. Emma McMahan was seventh; Claire Goldman came in ninth.

In the boys race, Sean Gilliam came across in fourth place as the lone top-10 finisher for CVU.

CVU wrestlers competed at the Michael J. Baker Essex Classic tournament last weekend, one of the toughest matches of the season with 28 teams from New England and New York. CVU wrestlers included: (top left) Riley Brown, (center) Justin Bissonette and (right) Duncan McGrade.

WRESTLING

The CVU wrestling team competed in the Essex Classic Tournament on Friday and Saturday, coming in eighth overall in the 28-team competition.

Justin Bissonette was the top Redhawk finisher, coming in third place at 160-lbs. Jared Forsythe earned a fourth place finish in the 182-lb. category.

Riley Brown (126-lbs) and Will Murphy (195-lbs) both finished in fifth place in their respective weight classes and Sean Trifaro was sixth in the 220-lb. class.
