Two Champlain Valley wrestlers qualified for the New England Championships with strong performances at the Vermont high school state championships on Friday and Saturday.
Jared Forsythe earned runner-up honors in the 182-pound weight class.
Will Murphy finished in third place in the 195-pound category, also earning a New Englands nod.
Other top finishers for the Redhawks included: Jacob Graveline finished fifth in the 120-pound category; Riley Brown was sixth in the 126-pound class; and Matt Trifaro came in sixth in the 152-lb weight class.
Champlain Valley finished in eighth place as a program in the 22-team event. Forsythe and Murphy will compete in the New England Championships on March 1 and 2 in Providence, Rhode Island.
Champlain Valley 73, Essex 56: Cole Otley scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and Champlain Valley grabbed a win over Essex on Monday night.
It was the fourth win in a row for the Redhawks, who move to 12-7.
Bennett Cheer added 18 points for CVU, while Mason Otley scored nine.
The Redhawks also earned a win over Burlington on Saturday, topping the Seahorses 58-47.
Ethan Harvey had a game-high 31 points for CVU, while Mason Otley scored 11 points.
Rutland 3, Champlain Valley 2: Champlain Valley rebounded from a 3-0 deficit but could not complete the comeback in a loss to Rutland on Saturday.
Jake Schaefer and Charlie Averill each had a goal for the Redhawks, who fall to 5-11-2. Logan Cody made 18 saves in a losing effort.
Four Champlain Valley skiers – two girls and two boys – found themselves in top 10 in a giant slalom race on Wednesday at Jay Peak.
Binney Patton (seventh) and Claire Smith (10th) both finished in the top 10 in the girls race.
Max Gorman was the top finisher for CVU, coming in fourth in the boys race. Ethan Lisle finished in sixth place.
